Final Folio

Final Folio:

What have I done?
I decided to do my final folio relating to the city of Melbourne and the aspects within the city such as the art forms (graffiti) as well as famous areas in the city (Flinders St station, Art centre, buildings etc). I wanted to portray the most important part of the photograph by highlighting it in colour and leaving the rest in black and white. A few of the photographs were taken at night time.

Why have I done it?

I have always had an interest in the city and the architecture and art forms within it. I was inspired by the photographer Martha Cooper and her views and photographs of graffiti. I believe that graffiti is an art form although some people think it is vandalism. I wanted to portray the positivity and expression of it as art. I wanted to portray the colour of the street art against the coldness of the concrete by making the graffiti colour and the rest black and white. This technique works well and speaks of the influence and need for more art to liven up our often bleak urban world.

In terms of the city scape photographs of Flinders street station, the art centre, buildings etc, I wanted to portray the importance of them because they make up the city. Some of these photographs were taken at night time because I wanted to capture the city in both the day and night to show how different they look in terms of the lighting.

How did I get there?

I borrowed the SLR camera from the university every week and I travelled to various parts of the city to capture the photographs such as Hoiser Lane for the graffiti photographs, flinders street and other places.

Where to from now?
I will continue taking photographs of city scene as well as my other interest areas. I am looking at buying my own SLR camera to continue my photography.

Photographs:

light experimentation

These photographs were inspired by a fellow student in my photography class who did her presentation on experimenting with light. It was done by using the manual setting on the camera and increasing the shutter speed to 10-20 seconds.

I used a match for this photograph.
I attempted to do a love heart.
The shutter speed was 10 seconds.

I used a candle for this photograph.
It was a swirly pattern.
The shutter speed was 15 seconds.

I used my phone for this photograph.
The colour in this photograph is very vibrant.
The shutter speed was 10 seconds.

Experimenting with fruit

These photographs were inspired by one of my friends photographs of a piece of fruit. I wanted to play around with the composition and colours of different fruit. I wanted to capture the detail of the inside of the fruit because it displays interesting patterns and textures.

Street Art

Here are some more of my recent street art photographs inspired by Martha Cooper's photographs. I didnt edit these in black and white, although I played around with the contrast and saturation in Photoshop. I really like these photographs because the colour is so vibrant and it shows the beauty and importance of street art. I captured the most important part of the street art to portray that it is more than a form of vandalism.

Portraits

I decided to play around with portraits of my family and friends. I edited them in black and white because I thought they looked more effective in terms of the contrast and tones. I like the way it gives more of a luminous effect.

Light sources

Last night I decided to take some photographs playing around with different sources of light. I trailed photographs of lamps, candles and light bulbs. I used the manual setting on the DSLR camera as well as AV.

Here are some examples:
